Are Magazines Obsolete?
July 19th, 2005 by Bob Bly
No, says Richard Notorianni, Executive Creative Director of Media, Euro RSCG, MVBMS Partners in an interview with Circulation Management (8/05, 0. 10).
“Worldwide, information is ubiquitous,” says Notorianni. “You can access it any time, any where. Magazines create perspective and knowledge and are enhanced by the chaos around them. The well-edited magazine is a force [in the market].”
What about you? Do you think the Internet makes magazines redundant? Do you turn to the Internet for all or most of your information needs?
Or do you still read magazines … and find that they indeed add a perspective and knowledge that’s lacking in Web content?

It’s not so much that magazines add perspective and information not offered on the web, but as some have said in previous posts on here, there’s something to be said for holding a real book or magazine in your hand and being able to read it on the couch or over coffee at the breakfast table rather than reading it on a computer screen. And for that reason, I’ll never give up my favourite books and magazines in favour of the computer. So, I don’t think magazines are obsolete, but perhaps they don’t need to print quite the same numbers as they used to.

Magazines are far from obsolete. One can only sit in front of the computer screen so many hours a day, and readers need portability. I think the Internet has affected the quality level demanded of magazines, though. In the past couple of decades, so many magazines seemed full of recycled fluff, especially those targeted to women. Today’s magazines have to be original and present something unexpected, information not available anywhere else. I can only see that as a good thing, even as a writer.

Hi! Bob,
I love going through business and healthcare magazines available here in India. It is a different experience from being on the internet because when you are reading a magazine, you are sitting in a relaxed, comfortable way and reading it to get a broad perspective quickly. You can also read a magazine while travelling which is not so easy even if one were travelling with one’s laptop.
However, I must admit that when I want to get more facts in a particular topic, understand a subject better, or research an area in greater depth then I depend a lot on the internet. There’s no comparision between the internet and magazines. It’s amazing the amount of information one can get - in just an hour’s time…sometimes even in minutes.
Magazines do not have that kind of versatility - to help you research and learn so much about a subject so quickly. Besides, the internet is an interactive medium.

I must agree with the previous posts here. I frequently gather information on the net, filter it, and bookmark the good stuff for immediate retrieval. Magazines hold a special place in my heart in my quest for knowledge. It’s the creditibility of the magazine and the fact that it is tangible so I can pick it up and put it down at random; I don’t have to wait for the magazine to “Boot up”.

I don’t remember to whom I should attribute the following comment but I heard a long time ago that a bathroom without a magazine is only a toilet.

The overall point of the entry is missed, though - the point is not the format (the magazine) as much as the media it is applied to (traditional print, internet, etc).
Too many traditional markets have entirely negated to embrace new technologies such as the internet, and are therefore faced with a very real threat of failing to adapt to an evolving media market.
Places such as a the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have seen fit to merge both media into an overall presentation, and they will survive for it.
The print magazine, however, that fails to embrace content publishing to the internet, is running towards an evolutionary dead-end.

The number of print magazines may gradually dwindle, but I don’t think we’ll ever see them vanish entirely. I for one would riot of they ever got rid of the print versions of “Sky & Telescope”. You can’t pick out constellations with a computer monitor in front of you, and even if you could, I wouldn’t want to. I may be old fashioned, but I’d choose print photos over digital images any day, even though I recognize the necessity of being comfortable with both.
If print magazines/newspapers did go the way of the do-do, I think advertising would suffer. I believe most of the advertising I’ve looked at was most likely next to or around a magazine/newspaper article I was reading — most likely on a two-page spread.
I find pop-up Internet advertising to be extremely annoying and often don’t even wait for my computer to load the ad before I cancel it out.

Will Memphis win it all? I doubt it. My money is going on Georgetown, Texas, or Kansas. But ya never know..
Somebody could come up and win it all from nowhere. But please enough of Florida already!

Well I don’t know about you but I think the Tournament has been quite boring. Too many top seeds winning.
I’ll put my money on UCLA for now.
