How to Create “Instant” Information Products in Just One Hour

February 12th, 2009 by Bob Bly

Want to get into information marketing, but are intimidated by the idea of having to create a product?

Start small, with a product that does not require you to do any research or writing.

The quickest and easiest product to start with is to produce a 1-hour audio CD.

Depending on the topic, you can sell your single CD for $29 to $49 ? occasionally more.

Here are the steps?.

1–Select a topic.

What topic? More about that in a minute.

2–Make a list of questions your buyer is likely to have about the subject.

3–Find a subject matter expert who is willing to be interviewed by you and answer your questions.

4?Interview your expert for about an hour over a conference line. You ask the questions, and the expert answers.

5–Sell the audio as a CD, downloadable MP3, or transcript.

What will it cost to produce your first information product this way?

About an hour of your time, and none of your money ? since you can set up a conference line for the recording here for free:

?What topic should I choose for my information product?? I can hear you asking.

That?s a good question.

I assume your goal is to generate thousands of dollars a week in passive income.

And you plan to make this money by selling your information products online.

The trick is NOT to write copy that somehow convinces the prospect to buy a product he doesn?t need.

It?s to create information products that deliver the desirable benefits your online prospects want, need, are starving for, and cannot live without.

The easiest information products to sell online: those that either make or save the buyer money.

Almost as good: information products that save the buyer time or aggravation.

Popular topics include: how to make major consumer purchases (e.g., buy a used car) … solve a problem (e.g., beat a speeding ticket) … or make money with a home business (e.g., become a home inspector).

So true! I’m lucky enough to have a friend who has a degree in production and the equipment to help me create great audio or video files that I have planned.

The audio cd is a much needed market for people. They want to learn after working for the day, but many are too eye-tired to read. The audio allows these people to still be able to get the information they desire and need to make their lives better.

I know I’m guilty of this. I keep cds of interviews and listen to them regularly as I lay back with my eyes closed for inspiration, and for going over items I learned previously in marketing.

Some people prefer books and other written materials. But there is a HUGE audience out there that prefers audio CDs precisely for the reason you stated. They are too busy and tired to read. Audio lets them listen in the car while driving to and from work, turning a boring commute into a classroom on wheels. I LOVE them!

I think your underestimating the time required to fulfill those steps. I gather you just listed production time, however, getting in touch with a decent subject matter expert and actually convincing them to give an interview can take quite a bit of time if you’re starting from scratch.

I assume that part of step 3: “Find a subject matter expert who is willing to be interviewed by you and answer your questions” includes letting the expert know you intend to sell copies of the interview in which they give their expert advice.

You don’t address paying the subject matter expert for this content that he or she in effect created. But it would seem to me that the interviewed experts own the rights to whatever they say.

If I interview an expert and record that interview on an audio CD, do I really have the right to sell that CD and use the expert’s name in my marketing without any compensation?

I would think not. So how does compensating the source of what’s being sold figure into this business? Flat fee? Percentage of sales?

Eric: Yes, but you would be surprised at how many of your colleagues and associates could qualify as a subject matter expert. Most people today have some specialized knowledge others would pay to learn.

Ken: All sorts of arrangements are possible. My arrangement is as follows: you interview me OR I interview you. Either way, we both own rights to the audio and can each do with it as we please.

Now that’s a great approach. You bring a potential revenue-generating opportunity to someone who might not have thought of doing it on his own.

    Thanks for addressing this point.
