LG Isn’t Happy With Me

LG isn’t happy with me.

She called me the other day to ask a question — a question to which the answer is long and involved.

Since I cover it clearly and concisely in one of my books, I suggested she get hold of the book and read that chapter.

LG’s response was to call me a money-grubbing slime bucket who had no interest in helping people but was merely in it to sell books.

Perhaps she thought the 80 cent royalty I would collect on the book sale would help me move into a mansion.

By the way, when LG asked me the question, she never offered to compensate me for my time.

Apparently LG feels that as an author, I am ?obligated to give free consulting to anyone who calls or e-mails. Many people seem to feel this way.

  • Certainly not the best way to get what she wanted. However, social media has greatly promoted the idea of this. Answering a simple question via email is not exactly “consulting.” Speaking on the phone for more than 2 or 3 minutes probably is. People are trained today to expect more and more from anyone in the public eye…including authors.

Yes, you’re not making much off of one book sale. However, the position that the book puts you in for other income producing potential is probably much greater than LG. Thus her response.

  • I don’t mind answering SIMPLE questions. But as I said in my post Ken, this was a complex question with a long involved answer.

  • I understood what you said in the post. I was simply adding to the topic. Especially what you said in the last paragraph.

I know you are pretty good about answering simple questions. But there are plenty of authors/gurus that are at the other extreme. Perhaps LG has had THAT experience before, and that is what prompted her response.

I’m very curious is this someone who you knew Bob, or was it a complete stranger?

I once bought a product from someone that contained a free consult coupon. I then attended her seminar. A few years later I emailed her a pretty simple question. She remembered me buying her product and attending her seminar, yet she forgot about the free consult coupon, and tried to sell me 30 minutes of her time for $375. After I had already spent several hundred dollars with her. Really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Clearly, you recommending your book is NOT exactly money-grubbing. She could probably get the book from the library if she wanted to.

You commented in another place about all the prospects that require time to deal with, that are not qualified leads. I believe ALL of this kind of thing is what happens when the economy tightens up.

I used to run a retail appliance store, and during rough economic times we would really get some nutjobs coming in for all kinds of strange and weird requests…mostly trying to save money. Including one guy who ripped his entire washing machine apart and brought in the transmission looking for a tiny part, that wasn’t even available separately. He got upset that I tried to sell him a new transmission.

  • Yikes! I can’t believe that really happened – what a nightmare.

Those are the kind of situations that really make me lose my cool. Sounds like you handled it pretty well.

  • I am amazed how some people feel entitled to take your time, then insult you, and yet feel insulted when you request something back. Seems manners are almost a thing of the past.

  • Ken, I think the point is that Bob didn’t want to spend N minutes/hours explaining something when he had already explained it in his book. Far more efficient to refer to the book.

I often do this on forums if someone asks a question which I have answered in an old blog post. I’ll post a link with a brief explanation and the person can get the whole story on my blog. No point in reinventing the wheel.

More than once, I’ve been accused of just self-promoting my blog. 😉

  • I once called a research doctor. His recorded phone greeting was, “If you are calling to ask me a question, write to me at this address…”

I’m sure that weeds out a lot of opportunists.

  • I get this quite a lot, especially from ‘friends’.

They seem to think they can impose anytime and get help for nothing. Yet, when I need something done and it’s their trade, they insist on charging.

These people seem to think if it’s something physical then it has cash value. They don’t think time is the same.

Incidentally, I get a lot of people saying I should help them out as a friend. Yet, when I need their help with something, they don’t seem to think I need a friend.

Bob, you’re absolutely right in wanting to get paid for your time, no matter how little.

My wife always says to me I give too freely of my time and, hence, struggle for money.

  • Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about people that feel this way. Happened once and will no doubt happen again.

Reminds me, isn’t there a saying that ‘time is money’? lol

    Well done Bob.

  • LG isn’t very smart. It would be a privilage indeed to get a answer personally from BoB Bly. However, what you offered her was very valuable. By talking to you she could have gotten a brief answer to her question. Had she valued the suggestion of the book, she could have had a detailed answer to that question, PLUS far more valuable information that was also contained in the book. Information that she could have had at her fingertips ANY TIME she wanted it (no extra charge). Her loss. It would have been WELL WORTH the investment.

  • Plus, I suspect that had she framed her question as “I’ve read what you’ve had to say on the subject in your book — and I was hoping that you would clarify a couple of minor points that relate specifically to my situation” and, if in fact the questions really were fairly minor, you would have been much more inclined to answer. Lots of people do try to take advantage . . .

  • To LG: If you think Bob is a money grubber, compare the prices on his Product List to the prices for comparable items elsewhere. In terms of price for content, Bob is the pound for pound champ. He’s an aspiring copywriter’s best friend. And he has always answered my questions promptly and succinctly. Ease up.

  • If 33 years in advertising has taught me anything, it’s the more freebies you give, the less appreciated you are. Many times my agency has donated free ad production for various causes from print to television. Only to be criticized by members of their adjacent committees. And in one instance, of being accused of over spending on television production, which they were never billed for in the first place. Unfortunately, we must all realize that by electing to be in this crazy business, we are going to encounter people who think our time is of no value. With those, we must be ducks and let the water roll off our backs. I commend you the way you handled this matter, Bob.
