My Favorite Online List-Building Strategy
December 9th, 2008 by Bob Bly
***My favorite online list-building strategy***
In traditional marketing, a ?loss leader? is a product you sell at cost or at a lost to get new customers.
I?ve adapted this strategy to the Internet, and the first time I used it, I added 946 new customers to my e-list, at zero marketing cost, within one week.
And unlike Google pay-per-click campaigns, which generate new subscribers who just want free stuff from you, all the names added to your list with my Loss Leader Strategy are actually proven buyers — making them that much more valuable to you!
This list-building strategy is extremely easy to use and costs you nothing out of pocket.
Another thing that’s great about the Loss Leader Strategy is that very few people know about it and almost no one is using it online, so it?s still relatively fresh and new.

Proven buyers with no out of pocket expense?
Sounds like every marketers wet dream.
This seems awesome but also a little too good to be true. I’ll make up my mind when I read it and test it for myself.
I trust you Bob and don’t have any reason to doubt you until proven otherwise.
Thank you for the wisdom,

I am off to test for myself by incorporating a loss leader directly into my new site design.
Lets see how it works for other people. Thanks Bob.

Thanks for the report Bob.Makes a lot of sense. This is a zero cost method of acquiring subscribers that will continue to buy from you over their subscription lifetime with you.And since it is a win-win situation for all the parties involved,I can’t imagine it been a blooper.Think I’ll JV with you for a loss leader report I will create specifically for this purpose. Thanks once more for the info.

I’ve always cringe when it came to giving away something for free because I know that they either gave me a junk email or will unsubscribe the first time I send them something in an email.
I have never used a product as a loss leader but I have done it with a service in the past and have seen great success with it. In fact this gives me an idea…

I really smiled when I read this – great idea.
Not only do you add a lot of names to your list, but they’re high quality, super-qualified names who have actually bought the sort of product you’re selling. Brilliant.
I’m now feverishly thinking how I can reverse engineer this strategy back into the physical world from whence it came.

Just read the e-book and I have to give two thumbs up!
Nice offer for the list owner and you build a RESPONSIVE list.

Thank you Bob for the great information.
List building is phenomenalespecially when it comes at a break even or a minimal loss (you have to build int he cost of acquiring a customer anyway)

I’ve actually been using strategy online and offline for a long while. It works, especially if you get a little creative about how you generate the leads.
You can get some incredibly highly qualified leads for higher-end client-services, not just customers.

Car dealership do this all the time by putting an add in the paper or on the radio about a truck they are going to sell for Billion dollars under invoice but when you get there it’s already been sold but while they have you there they have “Similar” full priced vehicles they want to see you.
Of course this isn’t exactly what you were referring to but it is similar.

Wrinkles: that is completely different. It is called “bait and switch,” and is extremely misleading if not downright unethical and possibly in some cases illegal.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:02 am
I agree but they refer to it as a loss leader? Go figure.

This is an eye-opening strategy, though I disagree with the statement that this is completely free — you still have to write a valuable e-book that people would buy and is worth $39. If you believe that time/work = money, then there is some investment needed to get those additional users/customers.
