Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, just passed away.
His obituary mentioned that the book sold an astonishing 25 million copies.
Sure, it’s a good business book. But there are lots of good business books. Why do you think Covey sold so many copies?

Well, you could start with the title. The title is a great headline, loaded with power words (habits, highly effective) and a number (list).
The book is a little near and dear to me because, although I am not into it anymore, it was my first self-help book and taught me about paradigm shifts.

From 1990 to 2000 to 2010+ = 20 years that 7 Habits was a best-seller.
I believe it was a word-of-mouth phenomenon running through the advent of email, the internet, and social media.
Also, many corporations embraced the book, his workshops, and speaking engagements.

Anyone who would want to improve his/her effectiveness in business and at home are drawn by a great curiosity title. And it’s ONLY 7 STEPS! It’s sooooo easy, anyone can do it!
People are drawn to the number 7. Remember 7 Steps to Freedom? A lame book, but a great title.

7 Habits was one of the more popular nonfiction selections during my years working at a library. Mr. Covey presented a formula to increase productivity, thus success, thus happiness. And it was all wrapped up in a convenient little book; no four-hundred page “Clancy” tome.
I believe it taught people how to prioritize, which is something that is sometimes easier said than done.
